Surgical Complications

One cannot consider surgery options without knowing potential complications. Surprisingly, one of the most common complications is operating at the wrong disc level or side. Herniated discs also can be missed or only partially removed even when the surgeon opens the proper location. These types of complications can be avoided with proper preoperative planning and training and with intraoperative imaging. Other important complications include infection, postoperative bleeding, nerve damage from positioning, and postoperative scarring. Between 5% and 15% of patients will have a recurrent herniation after disc surgery with the risk of recurrence decreasing with time after surgery.
